About SUMIKKOGURASHI

SUMIKKOGURASHI (translated from Japanese as “living in the corner”) is a charming world of characters created by the Japanese company San-X in 2012. The brand was born from designer Yuri Yokomizo’s sketches in the corners of her notebooks, inspired by the idea of comfort and solitude. These lovable characters embody feelings of shyness, uncertainty, and a fondness for quiet corners—qualities that have endeared them to millions of fans worldwide.

At the heart of the SUMIKKOGURASHI universe are five main characters. Shirokuma is a polar bear who dislikes the cold. Penguin? is unsure whether it’s even a penguin. Tonkatsu is the leftover piece of a pork cutlet. Neko is a shy and anxious cat, while Tokage is a small dinosaur pretending to be a lizard. Supporting them are a cast of equally cute secondary characters like Furoshiki, Zassou, and Tapioca.

Since its debut, SUMIKKOGURASHI has become a cultural phenomenon. In 2019, it won the Grand Prix at the prestigious Japan Character Awards. In 2022, themed cafés opened in Tokyo and Osaka to celebrate the brand’s 10th anniversary, offering fans a cozy, immersive experience in the world of the characters.

San-X produces a wide variety of SUMIKKOGURASHI merchandise, including stationery, plush toys, clothing, and accessories. The franchise has also expanded into mobile apps, video games, and three animated feature films, with a fourth one scheduled for release in 2025. The brand continues to grow, gaining fans far beyond Japan.

In a fast-paced world, these quiet little characters find happiness in simple things and peaceful corners—and they gently encourage us to do the same.

Hear From Customers

SUMIKKOGURASHI characters resonate on a deeply human level. As someone who often feels overwhelmed by noise and speed, these quiet souls remind me it’s okay to slow down. My favorite is Shirokuma—the anxious bear who just wants warmth and quiet. Each plush I own brings a small sense of comfort and reflection. It’s more than a brand—it’s emotional design. Clients and colleagues often spot them on my desk and smile. That’s the kind of magic this world offers.

I was never into plush toys… until I met Tokage. There’s something aesthetically calming about SUMIKKOGURASHI soft color palette and rounded shapes. I keep a small collection in my studio, and clients often comment on how unexpectedly soothing the space feels. There’s beauty in their simplicity. These aren’t just toys—they’re design elements that evoke peace. Bonus: they make brilliant gifts for those who need a little cozy in their lives.

Let’s be real—my daughter found SUMIKKOGURASHI first, but I might be the bigger fan now! These plushies are insanely soft (seriously, where do they get this material?), and the characters are so quirky and cute it’s impossible not to fall in love. Penguin? is a total mood. They’ve become bedtime staples in our house, and I even themed her birthday party around them. It’s the one toy that sparks imagination and also teaches her it’s okay to be different. Ten out of ten!
